The History of Fried Green Tomatoes

While this delectable dish is known quite well as a classic Southern comfort food, you may be surprised to learn that the recipe itself is not from the South! Believe it or not, the popular menu item first made its culinary debut in the Northeast and Midwest before trickling their way down onto our plates. In fact, fried green tomatoes were thought to be a quite unusual dish in the South before 1991, when the popular movie, Fried Green Tomatoes, was released.

According to author Robert Moss, traditionally fried green tomatoes were only eaten by farmers and their families as a way to make use of the under ripened crop. It wasn’t until the release of the popular film that Southerners were able to claim the dish as a regional fan-favorite.

Popularity of Fried Green Tomatoes

While the dish may not originate from the South, the recipe of fried green tomatoes certainly became perfected as its popularity grew. To some, the concept of fried green tomatoes may seem a bit strange – after all, eating an underripe tomato doesn’t sound nearly as appetizing as a the red ripe ones chopped up in our famous ceviche. However, once you slice it and throw it in some sizzling oil, it’s more delicious than ever and that’s because we know how to do it in the South.
