Mocama Beer Lands at Timoti's Nocatee & Karibo 5 Points

Interview with Beer Masters from Fernandina Beach’s Newest Craft Beer Creators, Mocama Brewing Company

Located in Fernandina Beach, Mocama Beer Company offers a range of beers from lagers, stouts, and “not your average” IPAs. With a focus on quality, they have been mastering the craft of beer for over 37 years. Mocama has teamed up with Timoti’s and Karibo in Five Points Jacksonville to offer exclusive small-batch brews that are like no other. In fact, Timoti’s Nocatee is proud to be the first (and so far only) St. Johns restaurant to carry some of the specialty crafts that have come out of Mocama.

Chanie, a long-time Karibo 5 Points employee, was happy to sit down with brewmasters “Hamp” and Jackson to give us an inside scoop of Mocama, and find out what makes their beer special.

How do you pronounce Mocama?

MOH-kah-ma

What is the meaning behind the name?

mocama brewing

Hamp: Mocama is a word that is from the Timucua language that refers to this location, from St. Augustine all the way north to St. Simons, Georgia. Before the Europeans got here, the coastal region was referred to as ‘Mocama’. We all live in Mocama, even if we didn’t know it, and so Mocama is a place where the people that live there are Mocama people. The lifestyle we lead here in our coastal paradise is a Mocama lifestyle.

What is unique about your beer?

Hamp: It’s about attention to detail, and details in the mapped out step in the process matters, there are a lot. From the filter, good water quality, processing, to consistent ingredients, temperature, and time, our brewer is very particular on his technical and scientific side of making beer and is super creative with his work.

What beer are we sampling?

karibo 5 Points

Hamp: We are sampling our Pilsner, Prosim, which is ‘please’ in Czech. We also have our Infinite Harmonies, which is our Berliner Weisse. It is a mild sour 4.5% easy drink. Great for Florida weather! This one is the passionfruit version. We also have the unfruited version as well. We’re also serving our Cosmico IPA, 7%. Super tropical, very refreshing, it's not a bitter IPA.

What is your favorite beer?

Johnson: For me depends on the time of day. Most of the time I’d say pilsners, something refreshing.

Hamp: I’m an IPA guy, I love our Cosmico IPA that you have on tap inside. (psst - on tap at Karibo 5 Points & Timoti’s Nocatee!)

What do you want people to know?

Hamp: We’re very excited to be partnered with Karibo and Timoti’s both in Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville 5 Points, and Nocatee. We look forward to a very long prosperous partnership together.
