National Seafood Holidays to Look Out For

If your New Year’s resolution is to switch to a healthier diet, you’re in luck because a pescatarian diet may be what you’re looking for. While cutting out meat can sound impossible, eating seafood is better for you and the environment.
To make it even easier for you to make the switch, there are multiple seafood holidays that give you more reasons to enjoy eating fish with your family.

Health Benefits of Seafood

Seafood not only tastes delicious but also offers a plethora of health benefits.  Fish is naturally high in polyunsaturated fats that can reduce your risk for heart attacks and heart diseases, and help maintain heart health. Many kinds of seafood also act as an anti-inflammatory that can reduce the risks of prostate and colorectal cancers. If that isn’t enough, some studies show that seafood can improve cognitive health, due to unsaturated fats which can improve memorization skills.

Wild-caught seafood is high in protein and contains fewer toxins than farm-raised seafood, which can offer many health benefits in itself.

Seafood’s Benefits on the Environment

Good for your body? Check. Good for the world? Double-check! Eating sustainable and wild-caught seafood helps create a healthy ocean habitat, which is more important than ever due to the high demand of seafood worldwide.

Sustainability means catching fish in ways that promote a healthy ecosystem. Fishing is actually more beneficial in keeping the populations of many species at a healthy level.
The carbon footprint of seafood is also lower compared to meat due to lower emissions. As fish do not produce greenhouse gasses, eating seafood is better for saving the environment.
